Anemia is one of the most accurate predictors of death in AIDS.  Anemia is associated with thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts leading to bleeding problems) and neutropenia (low white cell counts leading to infections).  Doctors use signs of AZT toxicity (such as enlargement of red blood cells within weeks) to confirm that patients are taking these deadly drugs as prescribed.

Anemia is often treated with blood transfusions.

Aplastic anemia is potentially fatal and sometimes cured with bone marrow transplants.  It is characterized by decreased production of red and white blood cells and platelets (disc-shaped cells that allow the blood to clot). This disorder may be inherited or acquired as a result of:

·         recent severe illness

·         long-term exposure to industrial chemicals

·         use of anticancer drugs and anti-HIV drugs

Hemolytic anemia is anemia due to the abnormal breakdown of red blood cells either in the blood vessels or elsewhere in the body.  It has numerous possible causes, ranging from relatively harmless to life-threatening.
