Diabetes and a growing number of other metabolic diseases caused by anti-HIV drugs were officially recognized in 1997/1998.

These anti-HIV drugs are toxic to cell mitochondria, causing diseases that affect all tissues and organs: mitochondrial myopathy, cardiomyopathy, neuropathy, lactic acidosis, pancreas failure, diabetes, liver failure and bone marrow failure.
