The Ethical Use Of Newer Vaccines

April 6, 2011

6 Apr|IMA – Dr Jacob Puliyel was invited to the National Conference of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to deliver a talk on the Ethical Use of Newer Vaccines.

The IMA is arguably the biggest organization of medical doctors in the world with 178,000 registered members.  Dr. Puliyel is a pediatrician and member of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) of the Government of India.  He speaks with authority and passion.

What makes his speech provocative and powerful is that – in the space of an half hour -Puliyel transitions from a pro-vaccine perspective to a discourse about how new and relatively useless vaccines (like the pneumococcal vaccine) are being pushed onto poor countries.  Dr. Puliyel describes how drug companies deliver huge cash incentives (e.g. KICKBACKS and BRIBES) to doctors who prescribe them at the expense of more needed standard vaccines. Every statement is substantiated by reference to original papers.

The starts and ends with experiments and lessons from Yale University.
